Lake Le Croix

Lake Le Croix completed 2008. Lake Le Croix is a acrylic abstract landscape painting on a 2.5' x 8' canvas. This pianting came about after I took a high adventure canoe trip in the Boundary Waters one summer. It is a view from sitting in the canoe looking at pictographs on the side of a cliff and it was really windy that day on Lake Le Croix so the water was crashing into the rocks splashing up. I tried a new technique in this painting by not using a single paint brush. This piece was all done with drywall tapers palette knife ranging from a 2" to 12" wide. I wanted to challenge myself to use new ways to apply the paint. After I started with the palette knife I realized how much fun it was and more free it felt. "Thoughts" Pen and Ink drawing

 Thoughts

Thoughts was completed in 2008. This piece is done on matte board sized down to 20"x 28". Thoughts was done with pen and ink wash. This was going to be a larger view of the entire head and more shirt until I cropped the photo and found that this visual I liked better. Sometimes accidents turn out for the best. Thoughts came after the Letting It Out Drawing Series. I needed something that was a little more calm and peaceful after doing all of the Letting It Out drawings. Thoughts is a large drawing that helps show my pen marks and energy I put into a pen and ink drawing. I love to use pen because it gives the control to show high contrast. You will also notice that cross hatching is a predominate technique of showing shading and helping with the depth of the picture in most of my drawings, especially my pen and ink drawings.

"Letting It Out" painting

 Letting It Out

 Done with acrylic and charcoal on a 40" x 30" canvas. Letting It Out was inspired by my studies of Max Beckmann. Letting It Out is emphasizing on emotion. I am using mixed media, thin/watered down acrylic paint, chinese marker, charcoal, with a polyurethane varnish. This is the first of the Letting It Out Painting Series. Letting It Out was seen at the Iowa State Fair Fine Arts Competition in 2009
